Exploring The “Candy Man” Court Case

Exploring The “Candy Man” Court Case

But this wasn’t a random crime, targeting anyone who dared trick-or-treat at Ronald Clark O'Bryan’s house that night. O’Bryan used the holiday to carry out his murder plan, spawning the contaminated candy myth that keeps parents awake at night.

O’Brian Vs The State Of Texas

In 1974, the O’Brian family was struggling to support themselves. Ronald held various jobs, but never for a significant length of time, which left the family drowning in debt and on the verge of repossession.

At the beginning of the year, Mr. O’Brian took out insurance policies on his two children. As time progressed, he began to raise the policies, which would result in a higher payout in the event of their deaths. In addition, O’Brian started to ask local businesses about purchasing cyanide.

In an effort to collect life insurance, Ronald Clark O’Brian laced pixie sticks with cyanide and distributed the candy among his children’s trick-or-treat group. His son, Timothy, ate the candy on Halloween night and passed away from cyanide poisoning. The police determined the cause of death quickly, so none of the other children were affected. Furthermore, it didn’t take long for the detectives to discover Mr. O’Brian was to blame for spiking the sweets.

O’Brian was charged with his son’s murder and executed in 1984 by lethal injection. The media dubbed him as the real-life “Candy Man” and reminds parents to check their child’s Halloween candy every year, just to be safe from copy-cat cases.

Stay Safe This Spooky Season

Cyanide laced candy is mostly a myth — for decades, children have safely participated in trick-or-treating and received untampered, safe sweets. However, that doesn’t mean parents should slack off checking their kid’s candy because the newest fear is marijuana edibles.

Recreational marijuana is not legal in Arkansas, but that doesn’t stop people from obtaining edible THC snacks. These edibles can come in a wide variety of different packaging and may not appear obvious to unsuspecting parents. That’s why it’s important to look over all the candy your child receives during Halloween events.

If there is any candy you don’t recognize, glance at the ingredients list or search for the candy online. If the treat contains THC, it should be listed on the package. Alternatively it could be a foreign sweet, which should be apparent from an internet search.

As always, remember to stay alert this October and report any suspicious activity to your local police station. Reporting helps keep Arkansas communities safe from crime and other evil doers who pop up during spooky season.
