Popular Gaming Website Under Fire For Reported Child Exploitation, Facing Lawsuit
Everyone knows internet safety 101 — don’t give out identifying information to strangers. But the internet was designed to connect individuals from across the globe based on their interest in similar topics. So how do you protect minors from meeting strangers when so many websites promote sharing experiences with others?
We don’t know…yet. It’s a new problem that will be addressed by lawmakers in the years to come. However, with a recent lawsuit against a popular children’s game, the need for state and federal laws is becoming urgent.
What Is Roblox?
If you have minor children, it’s highly likely you’ve heard of the popular website, Roblox. If you’re unfamiliar with the platform, children can create their own stylized character in a virtual world where they can play games and interact with other Roblox players. An estimated 111 million users play daily.
There are plenty of parental controls to navigate for minors, but the website itself highlights different user experiences for children under 13, going as far as making specific parental controls for children under 9.

Regardless if you would allow your child to use Roblox, the fact of the matter is the website saw the need to address specific parental controls because they have a population of users below 9 years old. That alone is frightening — knowing there is a massive online community aimed towards interacting with other users that features very minor children.
Details Regarding Lawsuit Filed Against Roblox
Jane Doe, a current 13 year old, and her family report that she began using Roblox at 6 years old. Jane’s parental guardian reviewed the website’s security details and felt safe letting her use the site.
When Jane was 10, she became a target for an internet predator who was posing as a child her age. In exchange for in-game currency (otherwise known as “Robux”) the predator asked for explicit photos. Unfortunately, by the time Jane’s mother realized what was happening, it was too late.

Three years later, the Doe family has filed a lawsuit against Roblox seeking compensation for the pain and suffering Jane has endured after being groomed by a predator. They feel as though the website, despite having a large population of minor players, provides parents with a false sense of security while leaving children unprotected.
With the Doe family coming forward, it’s likely that other families with similar experiences will start sharing their stories — meaning this lawsuit could spark other suits or inspire new legislative acts.
