Hollywood Director Rob Reiner And Wife Murdered; Son Arrested For Crime

As the director of the famous romantic comedy, “When Harry Met Sally,” Rob Reiner wasn’t expecting to find love on set. But director of photography on the movie, Barry Sonnenfeld, predicted he would soon meet the love of his life, telling Reiner, “you’re going to marry my friend Michele Singer.” Sonnenfeld was right, and the chemistry between the duo would inspire Reiner to change the film’s ending for Michele.
Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan’s fictional love story pales in comparison to the life Rob and Michele built together. The pair would continue their careers in Hollywood while raising their three children, making the Reiners well-known figures within their community.
The recent murder of Rob and Michele Reiner left the public horrified, and as tributes to the couple poured in from around the world, the police arrested their son, Nick Reiner, for the crime. As the legal details unfold, here’s what the public knows and what we can expect to see moving forward.
Nick Reiner’s Troublesome Substance Abuse
Behind closed doors, Rob and Michele were struggling to help their son overcome his mental health issues. At 22 years old, Nick Reiner had been to rehab 18 times, “...I have a famous dad and a famous grandpa, and that fame sort of informs who you are. So I wanted to edge out my own identity with a more rebellious, angry, drug-addicted sort of persona.”
The public became aware of family issues during the press tour for “Being Charlie,” a movie directed by Rob and co-written by Nick Reiner. The pair were open about Nick’s addiction and discussed their complicated relationship while promoting the 2015 movie.

It’s been reported that Rob and Michele “hoped Being Charlie would help build Nick's confidence in the industry and in himself,” but by December 2025, he was 32 and living with his parents due to his substance use.
December 13th, 2025: Conan O’Brien’s Christmas Party
Rob and Michele Reiner were concerned about leaving Nick alone at their home, so the three attended Conan O’Brien’s party together. Here, Nick was behaving oddly, which resulted in an uncomfortable verbal altercation. The Reiners left the party and returned home. It’s unknown what transpired after they arrived at their residence.
On December 14th, Rob and Michele Reiner were found stabbed to death in their home. Later that day, Nick was arrested and charged with first degree murder in association with their deaths.
As the legal system begins to untangle the events that led to Rob and Michele’s murder, the public will likely hear more details about the crime. However, Nick Reiner has acquired a high profile celebrity attorney to represent him in court and everyone’s wondering — how did he manage that?
How The Slayer Law Affects The Reiners’ Inheritance
The state of California has a statute that prevents individuals from collecting inheritance if they are responsible for the deceased's passing. As it stands, if Nick Reiner is found guilty for murder, he loses any claim to inheritance at all. It’s highly unlikely that these funds could pay for his defense, because if found guilty, he has no right to the money.
It’s possible that a family member is paying for Nick Reiner to have legal representation, but that comes with unique challenges. They can use their own funds to pay for the defense, but not money that was intended for Nick. For example, if Nick has a trust fund, the appointed trustee can be in legal trouble if they gave him money from the trust because Nick is not entitled to that money if he is found guilty.

Given the notoriety of cases Nick’s defense lawyer, Alan Jackson has previously represented, it’s possible the attorney took the case pro bono for increased recognition. At this time, we can only speculate. Unless the pro bono status is referenced in court documents or media statements, it’s unlikely we will know exactly how Reiner acquired his lawyer.
