How Modern Technology Helped Convict Ohio Teen, Mackenzie Shrilla, For Murder

Criminal law professionals and prosecutors will study the details of the senseless car crash that left two teenagers dead and one behind bars for years to come. What first appeared to be a deadly accident due to drugs or alcohol was far from the truth, and thanks to modern technology, prosecutors could determine what happened in the moments before the fatal crash.
While the trial was tedious, the prosecution was prepared every step of the way. The defendant was claiming amnesia, but the evidence gathered spoke for itself. Mackenzie Shrilla was convicted and charged with the murder of Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan.
The Scene Of The Crime: Strongsville, Ohio
The Strongsville senior class had just graduated high school, with big dreams and ambitions of making their way in the world. But for Davion Flanagan, his athletic college dreams were shattered when he suffered a torn ACL and UCL. The consequences weighed on him heavily and as a result, Davion began experimenting with substances and befriended Dominic Russo.

As for Dominic and Mackenzie Shrilla, the pair was in a long-term relationship and living together. Some people believed that the couple would eventually get married. Other people, like Dominic’s friends, spoke out against the way Mackenzie treated Dominic. Mackenzie also habitually posted images and videos of herself smoking marijuana, even while driving.
On July 31st, 2022, after leaving a graduation party, Shrilla’s car crashed into the side of a building at 100 mph. A first responder on the scene stated, “This is the worst crash I've ever seen.” Davion Flanagan and Dominic Russo were announced dead at the scene; Mackenzie Shrilla was life-flighted to a hospital.
The Evidence Speaks For Itself
While Shrilla reports that she doesn’t remember the incident due to a blackout from POTS disease, investigators found a glaring number of inconsistencies that demonstrated intent:
-
Marijuana was found in Shrilla’s toxicology report, but no other drugs or alcohol, and given her post history, she frequently smoked marijuana while driving.
-
No evidence of a faulty vehicle or criminal tampering to the car.
-
Video evidence of Shrilla turning onto the crash road naturally, at normal traffic speed before sudden acceleration and impact.
-
The vehicle's black box computer shows full acceleration power, no braking, in the last five seconds before the crash.
-
Wheel movement and gear shifting suggests that Dominic or Davion attempted to take control of the situation before impact.
-
Shrilla used the situation to gain fame as an influencer and appeared to display little to no remorse about the situation.
-
Text messages and reports from Dominic’s loved ones suggested an emotionally abusive situation, with Shrilla threatening to crash her car in the weeks leading up to the murders.
If Shrilla truly suffered a POTS blackout, she would have eased on the gas pedal according to prosecutors. As the case unfolded, the evidence made it clear that this wasn’t an accident, and the judge agreed, sentencing Shrilla to 15 to life in prison. During the sentencing hearing, the presiding judge expressed she did not believe Shrilla would be out on parole in 15 years time.
Finding The Right Criminal Defense Lawyer
In today’s society, technology is a valuable tool that can help prove someone’s innocence or guilt. But it’s incredibly tricky piecing all of the information together into a cohesive story. Despite Mackenzie Shrilla maintaining she does not recall the incident, the prosecutors used all of the information at hand (text messages, social media posts, street/doorbell cameras, and the vehicle’s black box computer) to show that the crash was intentional.
When you’re in criminal court, you’re holding the evidence that shows your innocence, but without an attorney guiding you, anything can go wrong. Maybe you focused on evidence that doesn’t exonerate you, rather implicates your relation to the crime? Or perhaps you said something incriminating, but did not actually commit a crime. It’s time to find a lawyer today.
