What’s Happening With Scott Peterson?

What’s Happening With Scott Peterson?

On Christmas Eve 2002, Laci Peterson, 8 months pregnant with her husband’s child, was reported missing. As the case started to unravel, the media frenzy followed, and eventually in 2004, Laci’s husband, Scott Peterson, was charged with killing Laci and their unborn son. Scott was given the death penalty, which was later overturned by the Supreme Court of California in favor of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Case closed, right? Not quite. Scott Peterson has continued to maintain his innocence and has a legal team fighting for his case to be overturned due to mistreatment of evidence. If you’re not familiar with the case, we’ll review the details and discuss the basis of Peterson’s request for his judgment to be overturned.

What Happened To Laci Peterson?

In anticipation for Christmas, Laci was planning to go to her mother’s house for Christmas Eve. However, the last time Laci’s mother ever spoke to her was the night before. The next call she received was from Scott, who had gone fishing 90 miles away the next day from their home in California, asking if Laci was there. She was not.

In April of 2003, Laci’s dismembered body and her unborn son were found in the California area where Scott said he was fishing.

The police promptly arrested Scott after finding the remains. He had made an attempt to change his appearance and had a significant amount of cash on him, leading law enforcement to believe he was attempting to leave the country at the time of the arrest.

The details become convoluted after that — Scott had a girlfriend that interlaps with his marriage to Laci, which means he was cheating on his wife. Scott told his girlfriend he was a widower, which at the time was not true because he was still married to Laci.

Upon his guilty charge, Scott Peterson has maintained his innocence, and he is fighting against his charges.

Scott Peterson’s Legal Defense

After questioning the neighborhood, there were multiple witnesses who reported Laci walking her dog in the neighborhood on the day she was reported missing. Recently, we covered the issues with eyewitness testimonies, which is worth reviewing in regards to this case.

Within a similar timeframe and a block away from Peterson’s marital home, a burglary happened. Scott maintains that the burglars kidnapped Laci and killed his wife.

Scott Peterson has requested for his case to be reviewed and re-testing of evidence in hopes to exonerate him. The Los Angeles Innocence Project has taken on his case, in belief that Scott is innocent in the murder of Laci Peterson. Currently, they are fighting to overturn his life-in-jail sentence, but the court has yet to make their final decision — to let Scott go or keep him in prison.
