Baby Veronica Case Sees New Developments Post-Supreme Court Ruling
Earlier this month, the South Carolina Supreme Court ruled that "Baby Veronica," the now-three-year-old girl at the heart of a contentious custody battle between her South Carolina adoptive parents and her biological father, who is Native American, should be returned to the adoptive parents.
This ruling followed on the heels of the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling overturning a prior ruling finding in favor of the biological father.
Barring any further developments, the child will transition back to the custody and care of the adoptive couple who raised her from birth until 2011, when Dusten Brown, the biological father, took custody. That earlier change of custody took place after the courts concluded the Indian Child Welfare Act required the girl to be returned to her father.
This has been a heartbreaking case, and it may not be over: Brown is apparently seeking the intervention and assistance of state senators in Oklahoma to undo the recent decisions that resulted in his losing custody of Veronica. Here's hoping there will at long last be some finality in the child's life, and in the lives of those who care for her.
